The arrival of a baby is an exciting new chapter in a couple’s life and the entire pregnancy phase is a part of that journey. As a photographer, I have been asked multiple times, when to book the Maternity and how should a couple prepare for this session. So here are some tips that I would recommend.
When should I book a Maternity photo session?
Around 32 to 35 weeks would be the best time to book your session. You may want to inquire with your Doctor as these sessions require traveling to a studio or outdoor session.
How to find a suitable photographer for Maternity photoshoots?
Start reaching for photographers during your first couple of months as the Maternity session requires 6 months of advanced booking based on the Photographer. The best location to search is Instagram. Facebook marketplace and google nearby studios. Many of the studios offer Maternity dresses, which gives you enough time to order in case you feel the Studio doesn’t cater to your style or size.
Should I book an outdoor or Indoor or Both?
This largely depends on the month you are looking to have your Photo-session. Being in Canada outdoor sessions can happen only from April to October when the weather permits for long outdoor shoots. You may also want to inquire about the price difference between Indoor or Outdoor or both sessions.
How to prepare the family for the photo session?
Even though the Mom-to-be is the focus of the photography session, we definitely want the Father and siblings to look at the best as well. If you are aware what is the color and style of maternity gowns you would be wearing, it is best advised to have matching outfits for the family as well. For men and boys, formal wear is advised.
To Glam or not for a maternity photoshoot?
Having a professional do your makeup and hair is of course recommended as this is your once major opportunity to capture those rare occasions, something you have spent months preparing and searching for you want to make sure you have not left any stone unturned. Many of the Studios offer Makeup as part of the package so you may want to look into the various options offered by the photographer. If seeking your own professional artist, make sure you have them booked well in advance for your photoshoot session as well.
